SP, alternate years. What is CRISPR-based genome editing and how is it different from recombinant DNA used to make genetically modified organisms? How do cell- and gene-based technologies work and how are they applied in medicine, agriculture, industry, forensics, and environmental bioremediation? What are the social, ethical, and religious implications? In reading assignments and discussions, students explore scientific, societal, and Christian perspectives of biotechnology, including biosafety, sustainability, patenting, and “playing God.” Prerequisite(s): BIOL 141  or BIOL 161 . Corequisite(s): BIOL 325L .
