History Major, BA

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Academic Departments and Degrees

The history major is an excellent liberal arts major for students wishing to deepen their understanding of the world and its diverse cultures, past and present. Majors will develop valuable and highly transferable skills in research, textual and cultural analysis, and oral and written rhetoric. These provide an excellent foundation for vocations such as law, journalism, ministry, library science, business, and teaching.

History majors are encouraged to consider minors in closely related fields such as Africana studies, archaeology, classical and medieval studies, or gender studies, as well as minors in more diverse areas.

The history major requires two specific courses on the methods and practice of history; ideally these are taken in the first year (HIST 294 ) and senior year (HIST 395 ). In between these two endpoints, History majors choose their own program of courses according to their particular interests, within certain guidelines that ensure chronological, geographical, cultural, and disciplinary diversity.

One elective (4 semester hours) is waived for students double-majoring in history and another subject.

Electives

Take electives to reach a minimum of 36 hours (minimum 32 hours for double majors), according to these guidelines:

  • At least one HIST (or ARTH) course from each of the three geographic areas below (North America, Europe, and World/Global).
  • At least two courses must be at the 300 level.
  • No more than 8 hours may be ARTH or CLAS.
  • No more than 4 hours may be at the 100 level.

Total Semester Hours: 36†

*HIST 390  is an optional semester-long independent research project that must be individually arranged with an advisor. HIST 390  is a prerequisite for HNRS 399 ; this two-semester independent study sequence fulfills the thesis requirement for Honors and Collegiate Scholars.

**IDIS 375  is required for students in the Secondary Education program. Students outside this program who wish to take this course must obtain instructor approval.

†If double-majoring in History and another subject: 32 semester hours
