The Department of Politics and Economics offers a variety of economics courses in economic theory and practice, money and banking, managerial economics, business cycles and forecasting, econometric analysis, health economics, public finance, economic development, and special topics leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics.
The department also offers a minor in economics that complements a wide variety of academic pursuits, including professional programs, computer science, data analytics, natural sciences, and humanities. The minor requires six courses, some of which may fulfill requirements for the students’ primary major as well.
The department offers a group major in social sciences. The purpose of this group major is to give students additional flexibility to design a broad-based program suited to their interests. Group majors work with their academic advisor to plan a coherent program that meets the approval of the economics department and the interests of the student.
Economic courses also contribute to interdisciplinary majors in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (PPE), Elementary Social Studies Education, and Secondary Social Studies Education.
Internships
The department encourages students majoring in economics to participate in internship programs. Students seeking course credit may enroll in ECON 383 External Practicum with the approval of the department or participate in the Henry Semester in Washington, DC.
To be admitted to the major program in economics, a student must have completed ECON 221 and ECON 222 with a minimum grade of C (2.0).
