SOWK 360 - Social Welfare Policy Analysis

FA. This course helps students examine and think critically about how social welfare policies in the United States affect client systems. Specifically, students examine how structural and institutional barriers have influenced, and continue to influence social welfare policy and practices. Students are introduced to the history of social welfare policies, ideologies and values that influence policy decisions, and major policies that influence social work practice (e.g., TANF, OASDI, Medicare). Students will evaluate and analyze policies as well as develop practical advocacy skills in relation to human rights and social, economic and environmental justice. Prerequisite(s): for social work majors: PSYC 151  or SOC 151 ; and SOWK 240 ; for social work minors: PSYC 151  or SOC 151 .
