SOWK 240 - Introduction to Social Work and Social Welfare (2) FA, SP. Students will discover what it means to be a professional social worker in this course. With attention to the importance of diversity, history, and the experiences of at-risk populations, students will explore the range of social services and advocacy opportunities for work with individuals, families, groups, communities, and organizations. This will include an exploration of several areas of practice, such as poverty and inequality, housing and homelessness, family and child welfare, health and health care, disability, mental health, substance use, and criminal justice. Students will approach social issues from a strengths-based and systems-based view of persons in their environment.
