EDUC 331 - Introduction to Cognitive Impairment: Birth through School Age

(2)
SP. A comprehensive study of the characteristics of infants and children who have cognitive impairment, intellectual or developmental disability, or developmental delay. Common causes, medical and school-based definitional issues, assessment, eligibility for special education, and interventions will be discussed. While special attention is given to supports for children with cognitive impairment as learners, the course examines functioning across a variety of settings besides the school, such as the church, home, and neighborhood. A Christian view of persons, community, and discipleship, along with the concepts of inclusion, social role valorization, and self-determination are integrating elements in the course. Seven hours of observation in a local school or early childhood program is required for this course. Prerequisite(s): EDUC 103 EDUC 241 , or permission of the instructor.
