SP, alternate years or as needed. How do visual conventions developed during the last five hundred years inform what is possible to communicate with an image today? As part of the curriculum of the graphic design major, this course provides a foundation for engaging contemporary visual design in relation to the past five centuries of artistic production. The course attends particularly to the history of printmaking, typography, and compositional conventions, paying special attention to the emergence of consumer cultures and public engagements with print culture, from seventeenth-century broadsides to twentieth-century mass media). Prerequisite: ARTH 141 .
