2024-2025 Catalog
Music Education PK-12, BME
|
|
This program prepares students to teach music in PK-12 school settings. Students take courses in music theory and musicianship, music technology, music literature and history, and music education. Students gain confidence as musicians by taking lessons in their principal area of performance, participating in a wide range of ensemble experiences, and presenting a recital. Music Education majors develop teaching skills in dedicated classes and in guided teaching experiences, including a full semester student teaching assignment. Throughout the program, students learn how Christian faith commitments and practices impact teaching and learning in the general music classroom as they also develop skills to build and lead instrumental and choral programs.
For admission to the BME program, students must present an entrance audition and take a music theory test. (The music theory test is waived for students with transfer credit or a minimum score of 4 on the AP Music Theory exam.)
Students in the education program complete one of the following degree options for teacher certification:
- Elementary education: Birth-K, BA
- Elementary education: PK-3, BA
- Elementary education: 3-6, BA
