Master of Arts in Teaching, MAT
|
|
The master of arts in teaching (MAT) program provides an accelerated pathway to initial teacher certification and a master’s degree for post-baccalaureate candidates whose degrees include certifiable majors or minors. The program is designed for career-changers, those re-entering the workforce, and recent bachelor’s degree graduates. Students complete a condensed 12-month cohort program and benefit from school internship placements alongside intensive coursework. The program is characterized by 1) integration of academic work with an ongoing field experience; 2) programmatic coherence throughout the academic courses and from coursework to field work; 3) systematic study of classroom practices; 4) individual, mentor teacher, and instructor-observed evaluation. Upon successful completion of the program, candidates earn a master of arts in teaching (MAT) degree and a Michigan Standard Teaching Certificate qualifying them to teach middle and high school grades.
