Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Academic Departments and Degrees

The TESOL minor prepares students to (1) promote educational equity and the academic achievement of learners whose home language is not English; (2) deliver instruction in how to speak, read, write, listen, and communicate in English; and (3) support learners in their acquisition of content knowledge and academic language while they learn English.

Students in the Education program must combine the TESOL minor with at least one of the following programs: elementary education (PK-3 or 3-6), or any of the following 5-9, 7-12, or PK-12 programs: English language arts, French, mathematics, science, social studies, Spanish, or special education. Secondary candidates should consider the English language arts major or minor. Students must complete Calvin’s foreign language Core.

The program leads to the PK-12 English as a Second Language endorsement on the Michigan teaching certificate. Students who are not in the education program should complete the TESOL non-certification minor . Students in the education program complete one of the following degree options for teacher certification:

  • Elementary education: PK-3, BA
  • Elementary education: 3-6, BA
  • Secondary education, BA
  • Special Education K-12: Cogniitive Impairment, BA
