Master of Arts in Teaching, MAT

The master of arts in teaching (MAT) program provides an accelerated pathway to initial teacher certification and a master’s degree for post-baccalaureate candidates whose degrees include certifiable majors or minors. The program is designed for career-changers, those re-entering the workforce, and recent bachelor’s degree graduates. Students complete a condensed 12-month cohort program and benefit from a yearlong school practicum alongside intensive coursework. The program is characterized by 1) integration of academic work with an ongoing field experience; 2) programmatic coherence throughout the academic courses and from coursework to field work; 3) systematic study of classroom practices; 4) individual, mentor teacher, and instructor-observed evaluation. Upon successful completion of the program, candidates earn a Michigan Standard Teaching Certificate qualifying them to teach middle and high school grades and the master of arts in teaching degree.

Admission Requirements

• Interest in working with middle or high school students
• Bachelor’s degree with an approved certifiable area from a regionally-accredited college or university.
• Grade point average of 2.8 or greater. Graduate coursework and/or work history will be considered.
• Completion of online application including:
  • A professional essay explaining why the candidate has chosen teaching as a profession and why they have selected Calvin’s MAT program for professional preparation.
  • A current resume.
  • Submission of two letters of professional recommendation.
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
• An interview with members of the MAT team, which will be scheduled after all application documents are submitted.
• Attempt the appropriate Michigan Test for Teacher Certification subject test. Applicants who do not pass the first attempt may enter the program with the understanding that they must retake and pass the test for teacher certification.
