Business Analytics, BS

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Academic Departments and Degrees

The BS in business analytics prepares graduates to structure business problems in ways that can be solved by data-science, information-technology, or machine learning applications; and to plan, organize, and lead organizational change projects that deliver such solutions. These “business analysts” work with data scientists and computer scientists, and therefore require knowledge and skills in organizational information ecosystems, algorithmic logic, database queries, predictive analytics, and the translation of business rules into software code. However, they also bring complementary business acumen, people management, and organizational change skills, including process design, collaborative project management, and negotiation, as well as an understanding of the business imperatives driving technological adoption.

Business analysts often begin their careers coordinating development projects, whether for the in-house information technology departments of large organizations, for software application development companies, or for systems integration and market intelligence consultancies. Further, analysts act as the communication bridge between the business and technology communities with strong presentation and leadership skills.

Students attracted to business, who also have abilities in systems thinking and data-driven inquiry, would be good candidates for this program. Students who are attracted to technology and have abilities in collaborative business problem-solving would also be good candidates for this program.

For entry into 300-level courses, students must achieve at least a C in BUS 201  and ACCT 203 .

Overlap Policy

This program may not be combined with the business minor  or information systems minor  programs. No more than two majors from the School of Business may be obtained.
