Calvin-Partnered Program: Chicago Semester (CSP)

The Chicago Semester is a Calvin-partnered program. Open to all majors, the Chicago Semester (CSP) is sponsored by Calvin together with Central, Dordt, Hope, Northwestern, and Trinity Colleges and is administered by Trinity Christian College. It offers qualified juniors and seniors the opportunity to gain a semester’s credit through studying and working in Chicago. Students participate in seminars at the Chicago Semester’s Loop Center and spend four days a week in an internship related to their career interest and academic major. Students not in a special track (education, nursing, or social work) take two seminars in addition to their internship.

Other CSP Course Opportunities

  • Nursing Internship/Professional Seminar. The nursing internship and professional seminar is supervised by the Chicago Semester director of nursing in cooperation with Hope College and a contracted healthcare agency. It is designed to deepen the student’s socialization into professional nursing and focuses on issues and services related to healthcare in an urban context as well as leadership and management roles that enhance the transition from the student role to the professional RN. Students complete an internship from a wide range of quality clinical specialties of their choice to synthesize the concepts and philosophies of nursing from previous college courses and to develop competencies and skills that are necessary for the beginning roles of the professional nurse. The weekly professional seminar focuses on NCLEX review and discussions of the professional nurse, social justice and healthcare, Christian worldview, diversity, and vocation.

Other Departmental Course Opportunities

  • Social Work Professional Seminar. This course provides students with the opportunity to apply previous classroom learning to actual social work practice situations. Students engage in professional social work roles in an agency setting to gain a better understanding of the meaning of professionalism, social policy, diversity, cultural competence, professional ethics, work with a client system, and community engagement from a generalist practice perspective.
