Politics, Philosophy, and Economics Major

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Academic Departments and Degrees

The PPE major bridges gaps between economics and political science as social sciences and philosophy as one of the humanities. It helps students bring philosophical insights to bear on empirical social science research and use social science to measure philosophical concepts like equality and justice. The program works within the framework of faith, emphasizing Christian vocation and a demonstrated commitment to civil and informed public discourse and policy. The program provides structure within this flexibility through foundational and intermediate courses in each discipline and concludes with a capstone course.

Common Foundations

Specialized Courses

Twelve additional semester hours, half of which are in advanced-level courses (300 level), from at least two of three PPE disciplines. Students who come to Calvin with both Common Foundations courses already fulfilled in any of the Politics, Philosophy, or Economics subcategories must take at least one of their Specialized Courses in the corresponding discipline at Calvin. Students will work with their PPE advisor to develop a rationale and course plan for the courses they will take to complete the program, which may include up to three hours of internship credit.

Total Semester Hours: 48-52
