The department offers the English major with four concentrations (general, linguistics, literature, and writing). It also offers minors in the four concentration areas (general, linguistics, literature, and writing), and it participates in interdisciplinary minors in ESL  and journalism .

Students interested in teaching English complete the Secondary Education Major, BA  with the English Language Arts Education 5-9 Minor  and/or the English Language Arts Education 7-12 Major . Additionally, students completing the 7-12 grade band may elect to earn a BA in English.

Normally, all faculty advise for the English major and minors, regardless of concentration. For information about the English major overall or the general or literature concentrations, contact J. Holberg. For information about the linguistics concentration, contact K. Johnson. For information about the writing concentration, contact D. Rienstra. The advisor for education programs is D. Visser. The advisor for the journalism minor is J. Holcomb.

A minimum grade of C (2.0) in ENGL 101  or ENGL 102  is required to meet the Core requirement in Foundational Writing and as a prerequisite to any concentration in the English Department. Typically, ENGL 101  is the first course taken in the department.

Many English courses count in categories across the Calvin Core: for example, Foundational Writing (ENGL 100 /ENGL 102 , ENGL 101 ), Humanities (ENGL 200 ENGL 205 , ENGL 210 ENGL 215 ENGL 220 ENGL 235 ENGL 300 ENGL 305 ENGL 315 , ENGL 320 , ENGL 335 ), Arts and Rhetoric (ENGL 260 , ENGL 340 , ENGL 360 ), Social and Behavioral Sciences (ENGL 372 ). Christian Foundations II can be fulfilled with ENGL 250 . Individual sections of some courses also fulfill course requirements in Global, Sustainability, and Engaged Citizenship tags. These are only examples; check the English department website and Core Program materials for the most up-to-date and exhaustive list.
