University Core

World Languages I

Core competence in a language other than English can be demonstrated by successful completion of one of the following:

  • A course numbered 102 or higher in a language other than English
  • Three years (or more) of high school study of the same foreign language with a minimum grade of B each semester
  • Demonstration of “Novice High” for European languages or “Novice Mid” for Asian languages (as defined by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, ACTFL) through an official Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) administered by an external certified organization
World Languages II

Students who successfully complete a world language course numbered 201 or higher will fulfill the World Languages II category of the Knowledge and Understanding section of the core.

Students who successfully complete one of the following courses will earn the Global Regions and Cultures Tag:

Chinese

The Chinese language program includes four courses at the beginner and intermediate levels and is administered by the Department of World Languages. Chinese language courses can also be taken to fulfill the language component of the Asian Studies major or minor.

Dutch

The Dutch language program includes four courses at the beginner and intermediate levels and is administered by the Department of World Languages.

French

The French language program includes courses at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels and is administered by the Department of World Languages. Students may obtain majors and minors in French and French Education. Students interested in teacher education programs should meet with the appropriate department advisor as soon as possible to map out a four-year plan.

French Study-Abroad Opportunities

Study in France (STFR). Calvin offers an advanced language and literature program and a core language program in Grenoble, France. Through courses taught by the program director and those offered at the Centre Universitaire d’Études Françaises (CUEF) of the Université de Grenoble Alpes, students obtain 15 semester hours of language, literature, and culture credit. Students live individually with French host families and take part in group excursions. FREN 301  and FREN 302  are prerequisites for the advanced program. FREN 351  is recommended.

Students with little or no previous French may complete the world language core requirements through the Study in France program. Students enroll in intensive language courses at the Centre Universitaire d’Etudes Françaises of the Université de Grenoble 3 Stendhal and live with host families. Students obtain 12 semester hours of language credit and 3 hours of credit for STFR 330  for a total of 15 semester hours.

German

The German language program includes courses at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels and is administered by the Department of World Languages. Students may obtain minors in German and German Education. Students interested in the teacher education program should meet with the appropriate department advisor as soon as possible to map out a four-year plan.

Japanese

The Japanese language program includes four courses at the beginner and intermediate levels and is administered by the Department of World Languages. Japanese language courses can also be taken to fulfill the language component of the Asian Studies major or minor.

Japanese Study-Abroad Opportunities

During both fall and spring semesters students may participate in a semester program of intensive Japanese language study at the Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU) in Hikone, Japan. The center is run in cooperation with the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and other Michigan colleges and universities. Korean

The Korean language program includes four courses at the beginner and intermediate levels and is administered by the Department of World Languages. Korean language courses can also be taken to fulfill the language component of the Asian Studies major or minor.

Korean Study-Abroad Opportunities

During both fall and spring semesters students may participate in a semester exchange program at Handong University, a Christian institution in Pohang, South Korea. This program is an exchange program, which Calvin has developed to allow an equal number of students to be exchanged between the two institutions. See the Off-Campus Programs website for more information or speak with O. Spanish

The Spanish language program includes courses at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels and is administered by the Department of World Languages. Students may obtain majors and minors in Spanish, Spanish Education, and Bilingual Education. Students interested in teacher education programs should meet with the appropriate department advisor as soon as possible to map out a four-year plan.

Spanish Study-Abroad Opportunities

Spanish Studies in Spain (STSP). During the spring semester of each year, Calvin offers an advanced Spanish program in Oviedo, Spain. Students take 12-17 semester hours toward a Spanish major or minor, live individually with Spanish families, participate in educational excursions, and attend classes on the campus of the Universidad de Oviedo. Prerequisite: SPAN 301 .

Spanish Studies in Peru (STPE). From mid-August through the fall semester in even-numbered years (e.g., 2022, 2024, 2026), Calvin offers an advanced Spanish program in Arequipa, Peru. Students take 12-17 hours toward a Spanish major or minor, live individually with Peruvian families, participate in educational excursions, and attend classes on the campus of Universidad Católica San Pablo. Prerequisite: SPAN 301 .

Spanish Studies in Honduras (SPHO). In the spring semester of 2022 and during the fall semester in odd-numbered years (e.g., 2023, 2025, 2027), Calvin offers an advanced Spanish program for majors and minors in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Students take 12-17 hours toward a Spanish major or minor, live individually with Honduran families, participate in educational excursions, and attend classes on the campus of the Universidad Pedagógica Nacional Francisco Morazán. Prerequisite: SPAN 301 .

Summer Term in Yucatan, Mexico. During May, students spend three weeks immersed in Mexican culture and Spanish language while living with families in Merida, Yucatan.Prerequisite: SPAN 201  and permission of the program director.
