The department offers the English major with four concentrations (general, linguistics, literature, and writing). Additionally, the department offers a major in Secondary Education as well as a Language Arts Group Major: Elementary Education. It also offers minors in the four concentration areas (general, linguistics, literature, and writing) and in Secondary Education, and it participates in interdisciplinary minors in ESL  and journalism.

Normally, all faculty advise for the English major and minors, regardless of concentration. For information about the linguistics concentration, contact K. Johnson. For information about the general or literature concentrations, contact J. Holberg. For information about the writing concentration, contact G. Schmidt. The advisor for the secondary-education programs is K. Saupe. The advisors for the elementary-education programs are D. Hettinga and J. Holcomb. The advisors for the journalism minor are J. Holcomb and D. Hettinga.

A minimum grade of C (2.0) in ENGL 101  or ENGL 102  is required to meet the core requirement in Foundational Writing and as a prerequisite to any concentration in the English Department. Typically, ENGL 101 is the first course taken in the department.

Many English courses count in categories across the Calvin Core: for example, Foundational Writing (ENGL 100 /102 , 101 ), Humanities (ENGL 205 , 205 , 210 , 220 , 315 , 320 , 335 ), Arts and Rhetoric (ENGL 241 , 260 , 340 , 360 ), Social and Behavioral Sciences (ENGL 372 ). Individual sections of some courses also fulfill course requirements in Christian Foundations II and the Engaged Citizenship tags. These are only examples; check the English department website and Core Program materials for the most up-to-date and exhaustive list.
