The Global Development Studies (GDS) program seeks to understand the causes of global injustice, hunger and poverty in an effort to contribute to the effort of building a world in which every human being can flourish. The GDS program combines interdisciplinary courses with experiential off-campus learning, and internships. Upon graduating, students work with nonprofits or development organizations in community development, microenterprise, adult learning, justice advocacy, and peace and reconciliation work, both domestically and internationally.
The GDS major consists of twelve courses (eleven required, one elective), an off-campus learning experience, and an internship. Depending on the off-campus learning experience, some courses from the study program may apply as either required or elective GDS credit. The GDS minor consists of six courses, three required and three electives. An interim or semester abroad experience is also required. One approved interim course may apply to either the GDS major or minor program as an elective. Advisors for the program are J. Bascom (Geography), J. Kuilema (Sociology and Social Work), T. Kuperus (Political Science), S. Soo Lim (Economics), K. Riddle (Political Science), and T. Vanden Berg (Sociology and Social Work).
