IDIS 312 - The Science and Art of Modern Medicine (4) SP. Students will explore the complex and dynamic landscape of modern medicine through the lenses of evidence-based practice, ethics, and emerging scientific frontiers. Students will examine the scientific and empirical foundations of diagnosis and treatment, analyze the impact of lifestyle and environmental factors on health, and examine the role of AI and statistical data in medical training. Through weekly case studies and discussions, students will grapple with critical ethical questions in healthcare, the challenges of equitable care, and the delicate task of medical communication with patients. By examining the intersection of science, ethics, and social responsibility, this course prepares students to understand medicine not only as a clinical practice but as a multidisciplinary field shaped by global, societal, and technological shifts. Students will be assessed through written, oral, and video presentations. Prerequisite(s): senior status in a biochemical or biological sciences program, or permission of the instructor.
