This course will provide an overview of the field of human services, including historical development, foundational values, and ethical standards. The course explores the role and function of human service professionals working in public and private settings. Students will learn entry-level and professional skills needed in human services administration, social work, mental health, and supported employment as they explore their commitment to a human services career. The course will include an introduction to casework, group work, and community advocacy. A generalist-level analysis of professional practices, theoretical frameworks, and intervention strategies will be examined. Emphasis will be on working in diverse and multicultural contexts. Instruction will include lectures, discussions, experimental exercises, and small group experiences. Enrollment is restricted to continuing-studies students.
