REL 356 - Confucianism (2) A comparative study of Confucianism, its history, thought, and practice, in China primarily, with some attention to Confucianism in Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia, and North America. Topics include the life and times of Confucius, the Analects (recorded conversations), contributions of pre-Han interpreters Mengzi and Xunzi, the classical synthesis by Dong Zhongshu, reformers Zhu Xi and Wang Yangming, and contemporary Confucians responding to Western colonialism and Chinese nationalism. Prerequisite(s): Foundations of Christianity I Core or a 200-level biblical/theological studies course. Not offered in 2025-26.
