RECR 203 - Leadership in Recreation Programs (4) FA, alternate years. This course is designed to conduct an in-depth investigation of basic direct leadership skills as related to the delivery of recreation programs. Along with gaining an understanding of the theoretical and cultural development of leadership theory, the student will also develop their own leadership philosophy and style from an investigation of literature, course discussion, experiential activities, leadership opportunities, and observations of leaders in action. Specific topics, as they relate to leading recreation programs, include such issues as facilitation skills, leadership styles, team leadership, program leadership, instructional techniques, group process, team building, processing experiences, communication, conflict resolution, behavior, management, risk management, ethics, and direct leadership techniques. This course includes an 18- to 22-hour community-based placement in a professional recreation setting.
