GEO 153 - Great Lakes Geology (4) SU, as needed. This course in geology is based in the Great Lakes region of the United States. Our home-base is the Calvin University campus, with day and overnight field trips to locations with superb field exposures for a variety of geology topics and Earth materials. We plan to visit all five Great Lakes with field trip stops in Michigan (lower and upper peninsulas), Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. This course emphasizes outdoor, field-based investigation and learning. Students will be introduced to the breadth of geological study leading to responsible Christian appreciation and stewardship of Earth. Topics include rocks and minerals, landforms and Earth surface processes, weather and climate, natural hazards, and natural resources. As a graded course, quizzes and exams will cover course content. Students will be required to complete assignments, make an identified rock and mineral collection, and document visits to different locations with a field notebook.
