GEO 260 - GIS and Cartography

(4)
FA, SP. This course provides an introduction to geographic information systems (GIS) and the art and science of cartography—or, as the field is increasingly termed, geographic visualization. It introduces concepts of spatial analysis (what is spatial analysis, what are methods of spatial analysis, and how does one practically conduct spatial analysis) and the elements of graphic design, particularly as applied to thematic mapping and analytical cartography with qualitative and quantitative data types. Concepts in lecture and laboratory utilize the state-of-the-art ArcGIS suite of software throughout the semester, and students will learn how to use this software for analysis and cartographic production. Also, students will learn how to communicate with a map considering the audience and the social context, various techniques of graphic design and written communication, and the map as a metaphor for reality. Finally, students learn how to “listen” to a map through a series of exercises on how to evaluate and understand maps.
