BIOL 207L - Medical Microbiology Lab (1) SP. Students practice essential microbiological techniques such as sterile technique, simple and Gram staining, oil-immersion microscopy and both liquid and solid media cultivation methods. An emphasis is placed on choosing selective and differential media to isolate and identify specific microorganisms such as coliforms and Staphylococci/Streptococci. Biochemical testing of bacterial isolates is also emphasized, with students choosing a “pet” and then characterizing its physical appearance and metabolic capability. Culmination of the lab includes identification of unknown bacteria using student-generated dichotomous keys, and previously recorded physiological and metabolic data. Corequisite(s): BIOL 207 . Lab fee.
