PHIL 313 - Emotions and Motivation

(3)

FA, alternate years. To be human is to be embodied. Human emotions are part of the human experience as embodied beings. While philosophers have long thought about the nature and motivational force of the emotions, thinking carefully about the emotions requires taking seriously related work in other disciplines (e.g., psychology and neuroscience). This course explores the nature of the emotions, how they relate to human embodiment, their role in human motivation in general, as well as focusing on motivations to engage in collective moral action to address systemic injustice and oppression.

One previous philosophy class and one previous psychology class are recommended.
