SU, alternate years. Where does your stuff come from? And why? And is that good for the environment and fair for the workers and suppliers? Students spend three weeks in China seeking answers to these questions. The learning methods include readings, discussion and meeting with business and engineering professionals at approximately twelve organizations in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, and Hangzhou, as well as exploring important historic and cultural sites such as the Great Wall and Forbidden City. Topics include history, religion, urbanization, labor markets, environment, manufacturing, engineering, logistics and comparative advantage. Students also meet with Chinese Christians and hear how their faith guides their work and life. Evaluation is based on writings, quizzes, participation, and an exam. Open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors of any major. Preference is given to students majoring in engineering or business. Meets a Global Business Certificate requirement and an Engineering International Designation requirement. Fulfills Global Regions and Cultures core requirement. Course fee ($4,100) does not include airfare to Beijing and from Shanghai.
