(4)
SP, alternate years. How and why do we make recombinant DNAs and transgenic organisms? How and why do we manipulate stem cells? How are these and other forms of biotechnology being applied in medicine, agriculture, industry, forensics, and environmental bioremediation? In reading assignments and discussions, students explore scientific, societal, and Christian perspectives of biotechnology, including biosafety, sustainability, patenting, and ethical concerns. In laboratory exercises, students clone human DNA, express it in bacterial cells, and purify the recombinant protein. Prerequisites: BIOL 141  or BIOL 161 . Lab fee: $70.
