FA, alternate years. Satisfying Calvin’s Core requirement for three hours of Arts credit and the Global Regions and Cultures tag, this course provides an introduction to the visual arts of Asia. Arranged chronologically, the course focuses on the production of pictures, objects, gardens, and buildings in China and Japan, with brief consideration of artifacts from India and Korea. Particular attention will be paid to the role of religion, ritual, and erudition. The course ends with an extended exploration of contemporary Chinese art. Students are encouraged to address topics not covered in class with the research paper. Prerequisite: sophomore standing or above. Not offered in 2022-23.
