HIST 358 - Native American History

FA or SP. (Studies in the North American West) The course is national in scope, but focuses especially on the American West, with comparisons to indigenous peoples in Mexico and Canada. Specifically, it looks at regional Native American chiefdoms and states in the centuries before European contact; the impact of horses on the Plains; trade with Europeans and Americans; Christian missions in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; the “Indian Wars” in the American West, 1840s-1890s; efforts to assimilate Native Americans in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; and campaigns by Native Americans to promote their civil rights and tribal sovereignty in the twentieth century.
