SP, even years. A study of the microscopic domain of matter in terms of quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics. Major topics include: the structure, energy, and spectroscopy of atoms and molecules given by quantum theory, and the relationship between microscopic and macroscopic properties of matter (statistical mechanics). Laboratory includes a six-week project on a topic proposed by the instructor. Prerequisite: CHEM 317. Corequisite: CHEM 318L. Lab fee: $95.
