ARTH 238 - Nineteenth-Century Art

A historical study of the form and function of nineteenth-century art in Western Europe and the United States, from neo-classicism to impressionism. Special attention will be given to the relationship between art and the politics of revolution, to the cultural implications of industrialization, and to the search for scientific objectivity. David, Delacroix, Goya, Courbet, Manet, and Monet are some of the major artists studied. Slide lectures and class discussions, a research paper is required. Prerequisite: sophomore standing or above.
