ARTH 237 - Baroque and Rococo Art (3) A historical study of the form and function of visual images in Western Europe and the American colonies during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Special attention will be given to relationship between art and the Catholic Reformation, to the rise of nationalism and modern science, and to the emergence of philosophical aesthetics. Caravaggio, Bernini, Rubens, Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Watteau are some of the major artists studied. Slide lectures and class discussions, a research paper is required. Prerequisite: sophomore standing Not Offered in 2017-18
