2025-2026 DRAFT Catalog

Admission (Continuing Studies, Undergraduate)

Procedures for Admission

Applicants for undergraduate continuing studies programs must complete the Calvin application for Adult and Continuing Studies programs. In selecting students for admission, Calvin looks for evidence of prior academic success, professional and/or academic recommendations, and a desire to complete a credential in a program designed for adult learners. Although the prospect of academic success is a primary consideration, the goals of the applicant and the applicant’s fit with Calvin’s expectations and programs will also be considered in admission decisions. The university admits students of any race, color, and national or ethnic origin.

Applicants submit the following to the Office of Admissions:

  • Application for admission (https://www.calvin.edu/apply) using the Adult and Continuing Studies Application
  • Transcript(s) from any college(s) previously attended
  • High school transcript or GED transcript, if requesting review for foreign language (optional if not requesting a waiver)

Applicants will be notified of an admission decision soon after their files are complete.

All documents and supporting data required for admission become the property of Calvin and will not be returned to the applicant.

Applicants with low academic profiles will be reviewed individually by the committee on admissions. Decisions made by the committee are final. Any appeal of this decision must be made formally in writing through the admissions counselor.

Calvin reserves the right to revoke an applicant’s admittance to the University in certain situations, including but not limited to the following:

  • Student involvement in a serious disciplinary situation prior to enrollment
  • Falsification or misrepresentation of information provided to the University during the application process
  • If the University learns that an enrolled student has engaged in serious misconduct prior to the first day of classes

Eligibility for Admission

Calvin’s undergraduate continuing studies programs are tailored for adult learners who

  • have completed approximately 60 credits;
  • have a primary identity outside of “student” due to work commitments and/or other obligations; and
  • contribute knowledge gained from life and/or work experience to the cohort-based program model, in which adult learners are in class together with other adult learners.

While these are general guidelines, exceptions may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Note: Handlon campus has a different set of admission criteria, application deadlines, and consideration for transfer credit.

Note: This program is not authorized to enroll international students requiring an F-1 student visa. International students may explore Calvin’s other educational opportunities.

Application Deadlines

Completed applications are considered on a rolling basis. Applications must be complete two weeks prior to the start of a semester.

Evaluation of Transfer Credit

Transfer credit will normally be awarded only for work done in accredited institutions. The courses must be academic and similar in nature to courses offered at Calvin. A minimum grade of C is required in each course to receive credit. No more than 70 semester hours of credit will be allowed for work completed at an accredited community college; students may transfer community college credit any time during their academic career.

The transfer evaluation process begins with the transfer advisor at the office of the registrar, and may involve academic department chairs, as needed. A list of commonly accepted transfer courses from selected colleges is available online. Courses taken in residence at other accredited institutions are normally accepted, provided they have been approved by the transfer advisor in advance.

Veterans will receive credit, as recommended by the American Council on Education, for liberal arts courses taken through the USAFI and for a maximum of nine semester hours taken by correspondence courses from accredited universities in the program.

Students can also receive credit for learning through specific experience outside of college course. See Policies for Course Credits and Examination Exemptions , in this catalog.

For minimum graduation requirements, see the formal bachelor’s degree requirements listed in the academic policies section of the catalog.

Nondiscriminatory Policy

Calvin does not discriminate with regard to age, race, color, national origin, sex, or disability in any of its education programs or opportunities, employment, or other activities. Questions pertaining to Title IX, which prohibits discrimination based on sex, and Section 504, which prohibits discrimination based on disability, may be directed to
