Private lessons

Full time Calvin College students may enroll in private lessons during any registration period. Part time students and dual enrollment students must first receive permission from the department chair before enrolling in private lessons. Students enrolling in private lessons for the first time at Calvin College may be required to take a placement audition. For a complete description of private music lesson policies and expectations, please see the Music Department Handbook.
An additional fee will be charged for all private music lessons, based on the length of the lesson. Refunds will be issued to students who drop lessons, according to Calvin’s reimbursement guidelines for tuition refunds. No refund of lesson fees will be issued after 38 calendar days. See Financial Information pages in this catalog and the Music Department Handbook for details.
First-year music and music education majors will be enrolled in 100-level or 200-level private lessons in their principal performance area after meeting with a music faculty advisor during Passport orientation. A placement audition may be required. Music minors in their first semester of study should enroll in 100-level lessons but may take 200-level lessons with the approval of their instructor. Non-music majors may take 100-level or 200-level lessons but must complete all requirements as detailed in the Private Lesson Syllabus. Non-music majors at any performance level wishing to take private lessons for 0 credit may enroll in 000-level lessons during any semester.

000-Level
- 12 half-hour lessons per semester
- Lessons for elective study at the most basic level; for piano proficiency study for music majors; or for students at any level not wishing credit.
- 0 credit hours
- Attend studio class as scheduled by instructor in addition to lessons
- No jury exams, unless needed to advance to 100-Level
100-Level
- 12 half-hour lessons per semester
- College-level studies for music majors/minors or elective students
- 1 credit hour
- Attend studio class as scheduled by instructor in addition to lessons
- Jury exam every other semester
200-Level
- 12 hour-long lessons per semester
- Intermediate college-level studies for music majors/minors or elective students
- 2 credit hours
- Attend studio class as scheduled by instructor in addition to lessons
- Jury exam at the end of first year, thereafter every semester
300-Level (Registration for 300-level, advanced music lessons, requires approval by the appropriate performance area faculty and will be added only as needed. To register for 300-level music lessons, please contact the Music Department.)
- 12 hour-long lessons per semester
- Advanced college-level studies ordinarily for third- and fourth-year students
- 2 credit hours; may be taken for 3 credit hours in the semester of a half- or full-recital
- Attend studio class as scheduled by instructor in addition to lessons
- Jury exam every semester except during a recital semester
